A Message from HCPA Executive Manager Larry Whitesell

Welcome to the 2013-14 season at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts. Whether you are from across the street, across town or across the country, our goal is to create an exceptional performing arts experience for you.

When someone learns that I am the manager of a regional performing arts center, they often ask why we provide performances for the general public. After all, isn’t the HCPA part of Higley Unified School District and here to serve the needs of students? Yes, we are fortunate to be part of one of the top rated school districts in the State. As such, children in the Southeast Valley have convenient access to high quality school-day performances that enhance their learning. One program this year will involve grade 1-6 students in writing original stories that will be adapted into musical theater performances. Hundreds of students will come to the HCPA to see if their story was chosen for performance. It promises to be an exciting experience that will help make writing fun. Research shows that student engagement in, through and with the arts has positive effects on learning, attendance, and overall enjoyment of school. The HCPA and staff are also available for all types of performances in which students showcase what they have learned in class and after school programs. That’s a big part, but not all, of what we do.

We also play an important role in community life. Enriching lives through live performances is one of the most important ways that we play our part for you. The HCPA also plays an active part in the economic health of the community. We employ full and part time administrative, technical and custodial staff. Local artists and arts organizations, which employ performers, production and office staff, are paid to provide performances at our venue. We purchase goods and services from area businesses including lodging, catering, banking, and theatrical equipment and supplies. And our patrons and participants eat at restaurants and stay in hotels because they are involved in programs at the HCPA. As an example, a sales director from one of our hotel partners reported that over 2,000 hotel nights were required by people participating in a three day dance competition that took place at the HCPA in February, 2013. And all of the participants ate at local restaurants while they were here. The economic impact to our immediate community was significant.

The Arizona Cultural Data Project Task Force released a report that provides details on how the arts and culture sector has an expansive impact on Arizona lives and economies. A press release from the Arizona Commission on the Arts on May 24, 2013, cited the following statistics from the report:

  • Last year, over $581 million a generated by arts and culture organizations and their audiences.

  • Despite persistent post-recession obstacles, Arizona’s creative sector experienced a 22% increase in number of jobs and a 68% increase in number of businesses from 2008-2012.

  • The report is based on 219 participating organizations, less than half of the state’s active arts and culture organizations, so the actual effect of these organizations is even greater than the initial reports’ data.

So, while you’re here to enjoy a show, also enjoy the fact that you are making a positive difference in the community. You can make an even bigger difference by encouraging your family and friends to attend a show and to play their part in building a healthy community.
